Understanding Specific Types Of Birth Injuries

Giving birth always involves a degree of uncertainty and risk to both mother and baby. Fortunately, due to both educational and technological advances in care, the birthing process is not as perilous as it once was decades ago.

But, that doesn't mean that babies no longer die or suffer injury during birth. Sadly, birth injuries by OB-GYN, delivery nurses and hospital staff happen all too often. Although the types and degree vary, the most common types include:

Brachial Plexus Injuries

This type of injury causes the network of nerves connecting the spinal cord to a baby's arms and hands (called the brachial plexus) to become damaged, resulting in limited usage of the arm or hand. Brachial plexus injuries often occur when a baby is stuck in the birth canal and his or her arm is yanked or pulled out by a doctor.

Shoulder Dystocia

This type of injury often occurs when the baby's shoulder is stuck behind the mother's pubic bone during delivery. Various injuries, including brachial plexus, can occur as well as fatality due to the compression of the umbilical cord and lack of oxygen to the baby.

Brain Damage

This type of injury often occurs due to lack of oxygen caused by umbilical cord compression or strangulation.

Cerebral Palsy

This type of injury involves trauma to the brain that limits a baby's motor function. It can be the result of a failure to monitor the oxygen levels of a fetus or failure to diagnose and treat jaundice.

Cephalohematoma

This type of trauma causes bleeding between the skull of the newborn and his or her periosteum (the member covering the outer surface of the skull). Cephalohematoma is often caused by the use of forceps or a surgical vacuum by a doctor to help birth a baby.

Skull Fractures

This injury occurs during a difficult delivery and baby is too large for norma delivery. The risk of oxygen loss is increased and the physician may use birthing tools improperly to hasten delivery.

Meconium Aspiration Syndrome

This injury occurs when the baby aspirates stained amniotic fluid which can occur before, during or immediately after birth. Meconium alters the amniotic fluid reducing antibacterial activity thereby increasing the risk of perinatal bacterial infection. Aspiration may occur if the fetus is in destress leading to a gasping breathing pattern. This aspiration induces hypoxia.
