The National Institute for Elopement Prevention defines it as \u201c[w]hen a patient or resident who is cognitively, physically, mentally, emotionally and\/or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.janiceklaw.com\/blog\/chemical-restraints-rarely-ethical-or-appropriate\/\">chemically impaired<\/a> wanders away, escapes or otherwise leaves a caregiving facility\u00a0or environment unsupervised, unnoticed and\/or before their scheduled discharge.\u201d Nursing home elopment in San Antonio is almost always 100% preventable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Elopement and Nursing Home Negligence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have a loved one in a nursing home or other care facility, you depend on that facility to have protocols in place to help ensure that their residents don\u2019t elope. If they suffer from dementia, they should be somewhere that can provide them with the appropriate care and treatment. They should be identified as a \u201crisk to wander\u201d to all staff members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once a resident has been identified as high risk to wander, share the information with all staff, not just nurses and other direct care providers. Add a \u201crisk to wander\u201d assessment to ongoing resident assessments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Alzheimer\u2019s Association says that about half of elopements happen when a resident is new to a facility and their surroundings. It\u2019s wise for facilities to place these residents in rooms away from entry and exit points and to keep a close eye on them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If a Resident Goes Missing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If a resident goes missing, facilities need to have a plan in place that is implemented immediately. This should include a system to alert all staff members, an immediate systematic search of the interior and the grounds, and notification of the resident\u2019s family and the local police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once a loved one is found, it\u2019s essential for family members to meet with the facility\u2019s management to determine what happened and what steps are being taken to ensure that it doesn\u2019t happen again.
