3 steps to take if you’re injured in an auto accident

You were on your way home for a loved one’s wedding when your worst nightmare happened. You were struck by another vehicle as you passed through a local intersection. You were bruised and battered by the crash, so you called 911 right away and had the emergency team come to the scene.

When you’re in a crash like this, the next steps you take are important. Do you know what to do? Here are three things to do immediately.

  1. Check on others who were involved in the crash

If you’re able to, it’s important to check on anyone else who was involved in the crash and to render aid when possible. You will need to give information to the 911 operator. If the other driver is okay, this is an appropriate time to trade information while you wait for the emergency crew to get to the scene.

  1. Take photos to show the injuries you’ve suffered as well as the damage at the scene

Depending on your situation, you may be able to take photos of your own injuries as well as the damage to your vehicle and the other party’s car. Get photos of the scene, because the likelihood is that you’re going to start forgetting little things about what happened. These photos can serve as a reminder. If you’re not able to take photos, stay where you are and wait for help to arrive.

  1. Go to the hospital

Finally, go to the hospital. Once there, you should keep your medical documents for insurance purposes. You can call your attorney and pass those documents on to them, too, so they can begin building a claim and negotiating with the other party’s insurance.

Taking these steps can make the claims process easier and will make sure you get the care you need after suffering an injury in a crash.
